A Comparative Study of Health Data Spaces in Canada and the EU

About

Health data spaces, or health data platforms, are growing in number internationally. While their characteristics vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, all are made up of technical infrastructures and governance arrangements that aim to make health data available for research, policymaking, or innovation.

This project will examine the expectations, imaginaries, and practical work involved in the pursuit of the digitally-enabled health systems, and will offer a set of policy recommendations for responsible design and governance.

Sub-Projects

Policy and governance of health data spaces: This is a comparative research project so far involving Italy, Denmark, and Canada. It will look at policy and governance considerations related to the national implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) in EU member states, and other similar initiatives across Canada.

Project status: Ongoing

Regulatory sandboxes and digital health policy: This research project will examine how regulatory sandboxes are used in digital health policy in the EU and Canada.

Project status: Ongoing

A review of social and ethical issues related to the EHDS: This systematic review synthesized social and ethical considerations related to the development and implementation of the European Health Data Space. It’s intended as a guide for researchers and policymakers involved in the EHDS and other health data spaces or platforms internationally.
